Stipend Applications

MHSA stipends for Year 3 (2010 – 2011 cycle) have been awarded.

CAPIC will again be awarding MHSA stipends in 2012, 2013 and 2014. These stipends are $20,772 apiece for a full-time stipend, and $10,386 for a half-time stipend.

Doctoral and Internship Programs, as well as county Mental Health sites will be alerted when major updates are made and when this application process is open. Stay tuned for updates.

--------

To be eligible for this CAPIC/MHSA stipend program, a student must:

Be currently serving a predoctoral internship at a “qualifying” internship site. A qualifying site is an internship site for psychology students in California which receives some funding from its county Behavioral/Mental Health department. It must be county MH funding.

Be currently enrolled in a doctoral program toward obtaining a doctoral-level psychology degree.

Be completing the internship AND all requirements for graduation that same year.

Be committed to obtaining a postdoc position at a qualifying site within six months of graduation.

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Students from the following Doctoral programs are not eligible for this CAPIC/MHSA stipend program, since they have received their own MHSA funding from DMH:

- CA Institute of Integral Studies

- Palo Alto University (formerly Pacific Graduate School of Psychology)

Other minor criteria may apply, but these are the essentials.

A stipend recipient must then fulfill all stipend obligations (predoc & postdoc) within the timeline specified in a separate agreement with CAPIC. A stipend recipient's failure to complete these obligations will require payback of stipend funds.

Stipend Selection Protocol and Online Modules

Overview

CAPIC was awarded a 5-year contract for over $2.6 million from the California Department of Mental Health in September 2008 to develop educational materials that would help train psychologists in the Resiliency-Recovery theoretic approach to treating people with chronic mental health problems, and to provide stipends to students doing internships in publically supported mental health agencies in California.

The intent of these funds is to increase the number of California psychologists committed to working with people served by the California public mental health system, and to increase the training of psychologists in the use of the Resiliency-Recovery approach endorsed by the CA/DMH.

During the three years of this program, CAPIC distributed stipends totaling $1,981,625 awarded to 106 psychology interns. Over 75% of recipients are persons of color, speak a language other than English, have a rural upbringing and/or have immediate family with public mental health services usage.  Congratulations to all our recipients!

MHSA Online Learning Modules

The CAPIC Online Learning Modules are complete and now available for use. This includes 15 modules on topics central to work with clients of the public mental health system. These modules are designed to meet Continuing Education (CE) requirements for psychologists, and we are working to have the mechanisms in place to issue CE credits before the end of 2011. These modules are also available to the public free of charge.

MHSA Symposium - March 18-19, 2011

As part of the 2008-2011 MHSA grant, CAPIC held a 2-day symposium titled "Serving the Underserved: Preparing Psychologists for Effective Practice in the Public Sector" in San Jose on March 18 and 19, 2011. The symposium was attended by clinical psychology educators from around the state, clinical psychology students, and representatives from psychology and public health organizations.
